Brass Welding

Welding brass takes the right process and steady heat control.

MIG, TIG, and torch welding can all work, most often with silicon bronze filler or the proper brass welding rods. Since brass contains zinc, you need strong ventilation to reduce exposure to zinc fumes. You also have to manage heat closely, because too much heat can lead to cracks or porosity.

Start with clean base metal. Remove oil, paint, and oxidation so the weld bonds well. Pre-heat helps, especially on thicker brass, because it evens out the temperature and lowers stress as the joint cools. For torch welding, use the correct flux to help the filler flow and protect the joint. With TIG or MIG welding, shielding gas (argon or an argon-helium mix) helps limit zinc burn-off. Many welders pulse the heat and use a foot pedal to keep the puddle stable and the joint clean and strong.
